You Don’t Know What Love Is
A Song that Speaks, even sans Lyrics

In one of our many conversations during the late 1990s, my best friend and jazz guitarist/ educator John Dougherty told me about a purchase he had just made with a Christmas gift certificate that he had received. He decided to “put all of his eggs in one basket” by purchasing the Keith Jarrett Trio’s Complete 6 CD Set Live at the Blue Note. Since John was a guitarist who was teaching only a few students at the time, it surprised me to think that he used the certificate exclusively on one pricey purchase of music by the well known pianist.

It didn’t take long for me to understand why John had decided to make this investment in his musical development. He found that by listening to Jarrett’s style of playing on quite a few standards, he was able to take his jazz guitar playing to a more mature level. In his unpublished book called John Dougherty Gig Book 2008 and Beyond: 110 Tunes You Must Know to Make Money in the Music World, he included several of the standards from the Jarrett CD set.

One of these, You Don’t Know What Love Is, caught my attention almost immediately.
